A Place of Remembrance, Heritage, and Discovery

A Parkland Open to All

Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, Dean Cemetery invites visitors to experience the peace and beauty of its tranquil grounds. With its serene pathways, historic monuments, and lush greenery, the cemetery offers a place for quiet reflection and discovery—a cherished space for locals and visitors alike.

Our Legacy

Established in 1846, Dean Cemetery was founded during a time when memories of grave robbers like Burke and Hare still haunted Edinburgh. Its reputation as a secure and fashionable burial ground quickly made it a trusted haven for bereaved families seeking dignity and peace for their loved ones.

Today, Dean Cemetery stands as a living chronicle of Scotland’s rich heritage. Its grounds hold the stories of law lords, philosophers, artists, and academics who shaped the later Enlightenment and beyond. Among them is David Octavius Hill, an early pioneer of photography, whose innovative work left a lasting legacy in art and science.

A Cultural and Historical Treasure

Dean Cemetery is the final resting place of Scotland’s most prominent figures. Artists like Sir Thomas Bouch, Samuel Bough, Francis Cadell, and JD Fergusson are celebrated here, with their stories entwined in the history of Scottish innovation and creativity. The cemetery also bears witness to poignant tales of adventure and tragedy, including those of Arctic explorers Lt John Irving and Robert Anstruther Goodsir, whose lives were lost in the quest to uncover the Northwest Passage.

Adding to its historic charm, the cemetery stands on the grounds of the former Dean Mansion House, incorporating the estate’s original walls and connecting it to Edinburgh’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Our Commitment as a Charity

Dean Cemetery is managed as a charitable trust, dedicated to the preservation and upkeep of this historic space for future generations. As a registered charity, we rely on donations and the support of our community to maintain its beauty, ensure access for all, and protect its legacy.
